In you're not quite sure what Muffin-Top is, then you probably expected to see cake recipes here. Alas, no. Muffin top is actually a horrible affliction that plights many of us men and is to do with our underwear and our bodies.
A quick online search will tell you that Muffin Top is:
Well, your doctor may prescribe you exercise, lettuce and tell you to lay off the muffins for a while but here at the Ministry, we know there are some great ways to avoid the affliction, until your adonis body arrives in the mail....
1. Be honest with your underwear size
Come on, be honest here and put your hands up guys. How many of you have tried pouring yourself into a pair of underwear because they look hot, but you know they're going to cut you in half? (Yeah me too).
Being honest with yourself is half the work. Then finding a brand with a designer you trust is the other. If they've done their homework, and you picked your actual size then you should be laughing. However, it's important to read how some brands size their underwear and how they design it to fit. For example some brands design to a more skinny fit than others.
2. Avoid styles that hug your muffin line
Oh it sounds so simple I hear you shouting at the screen! However, selecting a pair of underwear with a rise that avoids your muffin line is another way you can avoid the muffin-top appearance. For example, some brands cut low and hug the hips, some are up under your armpits and let's be fair they look good on no one!
Here comfort is a big consideration; if you're just not happy wearing a higher rise pair of underwear and you've already reached for the exercise bike, just keep reading a bit more.
3. Pick underwear cuts to suit your shape
This might sound obvious and at the risk of asking your mates in the changing rooms "does my bum look big in this", it's worth thinking about seriously. Ask a trusted bro for an opinion. Maybe like "Mate, you'd tell me if I look a plonker yeah?"
Buying and selecting underwear for your shape is another way to avoid muffin-top. Some designers incorporate curves all over the shop. With a bit more "give" in certain areas and a bit more "pinch" in others. It's worth while reading up and seeing how underwear fits on the models too. If you've a similar build, chances are that's how it'll look on you. Debriefed Underwear is a great example here as they use models with a varying degree of body shapes as a rule.
4. Muffin Fighting Tech Underwear
When all else fails, look to science for the answers! Well, funny story... There are actually brands already that have given this some thought...
Firstly there's Bum-Chums, a British Made and quirky brand who back in 2009, hanged their elastic at great cost to them. They figured that a softer waistband that lays flat agains the skin but without being rigid, would assist in reduction of visible muff-top in their pants. They didn't really make that much of a song and dance about it so sadly it went un noticed until a bit later. That is until American Brand Andrew Christian launched their "Anti Muffin Top Technology". Their take was to use elastic in the same way but so that it just doesn't dig in. Again laying flat on the skin.
Both takes have as much credibility as each other and it's good to know in any case, that brands actually think about us when making men's underwear.
5. Back-Up Plan: On your Bike
If you've tried all of the above and you're still having no luck, then it's hard love, but if you want rid of the muffin top, then lay off the muffins and work it off! It's either that or else pants up to your armpits!
We hope we've given you some ideas at least for how to avoid the appearance of muffin top in men's underwear and that one of them worked for you.
